Composing
This strand focuses on the child’s understanding of the use of writing to convey meaning and communication. In the earliest stages, a child may identify scribbling as “writing,” but does not give any meaning to the writing.
As children begin to understand how writing is used for communication, they will provide dictation to adults by asking them to write down labels or descriptions on their work. As chldren progress, they begin to write symbols for a purpose, either to convey information or to tell a story.
