Print Awareness: Hannah

  • November 7
Hannah says to the teacher: I like Dunkin Donuts too.
Teacher: What made you think of that?
H:  I saw the cup on your desk.
T:  How did you know it was Dunkin Donuts?
    H:  I read it.
The teacher gets the empty cup and Hannah says, “Dunkin Donuts” as her finger goes under the words (she points to the words Dunkin and Donuts for each word).  Then points to the letters in random order and identifies correctly the letters:  D, K, I, O, U, N, N, and then says, “It has 2 Ns! 1-2 (pointing to the Ns).  I know that letter- I have it too.”

The teacher asks Hannah to hand out a portion of the nametags.  She sets her own on the table and then accurately distributes Joshue, Kevin, Keyla, Isidro, and Imani.  She gives Sehity to Saad.  She asks for assistance for Marcos.

Different shapes are on the bulletin board with children’s pictures and their names underneath.  While waiting on line to go outside, Hannah points to the printed names of the children and says, “Hannah- circle.  Joshue- square.  Sehity- square.  Isidro- star.  Saad- circle.”   Marcos in front of her begins doing the same.  She pushes his hand away and yells, “I’m doing it.  Don’t touch.”

When Hannah comes into the room in the morning she notices the banner hanging in the classroom.
H:  What does that big sign say to everyone?
    T:  Happy Birthday.
H: It has an H like me.
T: Do you see any other letters you know up there?
H:  No it’s too long! It’s bigger than me!
