Classification

ELS strand indicators

Classification requires children to use inductive reasoning and problem-solving skills and prepares them for future experiences with numerical operations and concepts of probability.

Young children begin classifying by simple attributes such as color or shape. As they develop more sophisticated classification skills, it is important to provide children with materials that have less obvious shared attributes or are similar by more than one attribute. This allows children to create their own rules for which attributes to use and how to organize materials.
