Your role

Provide opportunities for the children to see and practice writing in all areas of the classroom.

Incorporate writing into play in such ways as keeping notebooks in the dramatic play area for grocery lists and sign-making material in the block area.

Model writing for different functions: write a morning message on the board, write lists, write down the stories children create together.

Help children learn to compose their writing by taking dictation for them. Ask them to help you write some of the letters and words. Ask the children to read their writing back to you and respond positively to all their writing efforts and attempts.

 

Respond positively to all writing efforts and attempts by your children.  Value all writing or drawing products and display them around the room.
