Print knowledge
Print awareness is linked to later reading achievement and children should experience many interactions with print throughout their preschool day.
As they progress beyond recognizing environmental print, children learn how print works.
In order to make sense of print, children first begin to realize that it is the print that is read, then begin to understand the conventions of print such as the concepts of “letter” and “word”, that letters make up words, and the directionality of reading top to bottom, left to right.
