SpeakingELS strand indicators

Language is constructed through social experience.

Talking to adults and other children and listening to books are children's best sources of exposure to new vocabulary and complex language.

Very young children use gestures to communicate. As their speaking skills develop, they move from using only short phrases to using sentences to respond to simple questions and, with time, they begin to use more complex language and participate more fully in discussions.
