Welcome to the Early Learning Scale eLearning Course!

This is an online elearning course, requiring a computer connected to the internet running a web browser.

The ELS elearning course features media-rich presentations, both audio and video.

Javascript-enabled
The interactive exercises and features of the course require your browser recognize javascript.

Allow pop-up windows
To view all course content, your browser must be set to allow pop-up windows. This setting can be changed under "Preferences" if needed.

Headphones
You may consider using headphones in a group or public setting. The media-rich ELS elearning requires that you hear the sound that accompanies the screens.

QuickTours
These pop-up video clips will introduce you to important aspects of the ELS elearning course:

Note: alternate exercises for iPad and other iOS users can be accessed via an "iPad Version" icon on certain exercises.

Download and print the following documents if you do not have a copy at hand.

These links open each document in a pop-up window where you can use standard printing commands. Use the print versions as you progress through the elearning course. You may also access these documents on-screen with the control buttons. (see QuickTours below to explore the control buttons.)

Outline of the ELS eLearning Course
The elearning course is presented in 3 sections:

  1. First is an introduction to assessment practices and the ELS.
  2. The second section provides detailed information on each of the 3 domains on the ELS (Math/Science, Social Emotional and Social Studies, and Language and Literacy).
  3. The final section is where you will practice using the ELS.

Take your time
This self-paced course contains a lot of valuable information for implementing the Early Learning Scale (ELS). While it may seem easy to quickly click through the pages, you will understand the ELS best if you take the time to explore the suggested links, complete the exercises and consider how to apply what you are learning to your classroom. Complete all the exercises and refer to the ELS instrument and Guide Book regularly to familiarize yourself with the contents.

Take a break
Pace yourself to better facilitate learning the material. To prevent fatigue from non-stop computer viewing, take a break from the screen regularly to stand up, stretch, and think about how you will use the ELS in your classroom.
